2026 vCISO Pricing Benchmark: Published Rates

There is no independent survey of what companies actually pay for virtual CISO services — every "benchmark" online is one provider quoting its own rates. So we compiled them. This is what the vCISO and fractional CISO providers who publish pricing actually charge in 2026, by provider, model, and company size, with every figure sourced to its origin and nothing invented.

Ask what a virtual CISO costs and you get a different answer from every page — because every one of those pages is a single provider quoting its own rates. There is no independent survey of actual vCISO invoices. The genuine industry survey that exists (Cynomi’s State of the vCISO) measures how many MSPs are busy, not what clients pay.

So we compiled the numbers that providers do publish. Everything below is sourced to the provider or salary source that published it, labeled as a list price, a provider benchmark, or a survey — and where no figure is public, this guide says so instead of guessing. For how to think about your own budget, use the companion fractional CISO cost guide; this page is the market data behind it.

What providers actually publish (monthly retainers)

Provider Published monthly rate What the source says Source
FRSecure $4,000–$6,000+/mo “$4k–$6k or more,” incl. annual assessments, roadmap, scanning frsecure.com
CBIZ / Pivot Point Security $4,500–$12,500/mo 90% of clients in this range (vCISO + Virtual Security Team) pivotpointsecurity.com
SideChannel $3,000–$12,000/mo (to $20K) “From actual engagements, not market surveys,” 200+ orgs sidechannel.com
vCISO.com $5,000/mo (Strategic list price) Published rate card; industry range $3,000–$15,000/mo vciso.com
DISC $2,000–$20,000/mo Provider pricing sheet DISC PDF
Fractional CISO ~$120,000/yr average contract Firm states its own average; range $20K–$350K+/yr fractionalciso.com

Across the providers that publish rates, mid-market monthly retainers cluster roughly between $3,000 and $12,500 per month. That is a description of the published data, not a survey average — read it as “where the public numbers land,” not “what the market pays.”

Pricing by model

vCISO work is priced six published ways. The model matters as much as the number, because a $5,000 retainer and a $5,000 project buy completely different things.

Model Published range What it buys
Monthly retainer $2,000–$20,000/mo Ongoing leadership, roadmap ownership, reporting, defined access
Hourly advisory $175–$600/hr Ad-hoc advice, board prep, incident support
Retainer overage $250–$400/hr Work above the monthly hour allotment
Fixed-scope project $5,000–$75,000 A defined deliverable (assessment, policy build, readiness)
Productized fixed-price $1,500–$24,000 Narrow repeatable work (e.g. vCISO.com’s $2,500 SOC 2 sprint, $24,000 90-day foundation)
Tiered by-hours ~$3,500 (10–20 hrs) → $15,000 (30–45 hrs)/mo A block of dedicated CISO time (Zip Security)

Sources: SideChannel, DISC, vCISO.com, Zip Security, Fractional CISO.

Operator note: Watch the overage line, not the headline retainer. A $6,000/month retainer with a 10-hour cap and $350/hour overages can invoice like a $10,000 engagement in any month your SOC 2 auditor sends findings or a customer drops a 48-hour security questionnaire. The predictable-looking number is the one that surprises you. Ask what happens in a heavy month before you compare two quotes.

Pricing by company size

Two providers publish employee-based bands. They agree at the edges and diverge in the middle, which is itself the point.

Segment Employees SideChannel Zip Security
Startup 1–50 $1,500–$4,000/mo $1,500–$5,000/mo
Small business 50–200 $3,000–$7,000/mo $4,000–$8,000/mo
Mid-market 200–500 $5,000–$12,000/mo $8,000–$15,000/mo
Upper mid-market 500–1,000 $10,000–$20,000/mo $10,000–$20,000/mo
Enterprise 1,000+ $15,000+/mo or full-time (dedicated CISO)

Sources: SideChannel, Zip Security. One outlier worth noting: IOmergent puts a growth-stage startup preparing for SOC 2 at $12,000–$15,000/month (source) — three times SideChannel’s startup floor for the same headcount.

Operator note: That 3x spread on “startup” isn’t a contradiction; it’s the tell that headcount is the wrong pricing variable. A 40-person company with no regulated data and a policy-only scope belongs at the bottom band. A 40-person fintech racing a banking-partner review before a funding close belongs at the top. When a provider prices off employee count alone, they are guessing at your scope — make them quote the scope instead.

The regulated-industry premium

Regulation, active audits, and simultaneous frameworks push published rates up materially:

  • General regulated / multi-framework: $10,000–$20,000/mo vs. $3,000–$12,000 for standard mid-market (SideChannel)
  • Healthcare (HIPAA): $9,000–$15,000/mo (Zip)
  • Financial services (GLBA/PCI): $10,000–$16,000/mo (Zip)
  • Government contractors (CMMC 2.0): $12,000–$18,000/mo (Zip)
  • vCISO.com reports healthtech and fintech engagements running 25–50% above straight SaaS retainers (source)

vCISO vs. full-time CISO cost

The comparison depends entirely on which “full-time CISO cost” you use — and the sources disagree because they measure different populations.

Source Published US figure What it measures
Indeed $174,012 avg base Base only, 274 postings
PayScale $183,821 avg base ($121K–$248K) Base, 509 self-reported profiles
Salary.com $385,552 avg Occupational benchmark
IANS/Artico (sub-$1B revenue) $415,000 total comp Survey, 550+ CISOs, incl. equity
IANS/Artico (enterprise) $744K–$844K sector avg; top 1% >$3.2M Total comp, incl. equity

Sources: Indeed, PayScale, Salary.com, IANS/Artico 2025.

A vCISO retainer of $60,000–$216,000/year ($5,000–$18,000/month) sits well below the $415,000 total-comp benchmark for a full-time CISO at a company under $1B in revenue — before you add the 25–30% retained-search fee and the 6–9 months the seat sits empty. The model holds until your sustained need passes roughly 25 hours/month, every month; past that you’re paying part-time rates for full-time attention. The cost guide works that crossover math in detail.

Methodology and a warning

Every figure here is provider-published or from a named salary source — a list price, a provider benchmark of “typical” engagements, or a compensation survey. None of it is an independent survey of actual customer vCISO invoices, because no such survey was found to exist in 2026. The one genuine market survey, Cynomi’s State of the vCISO (200 MSPs/MSSPs), measures provider demand and margins — not customer prices.

So when you see a confident “the average vCISO costs $X,” check whether the source surveyed paid invoices (none do) or published its own rate (most do). Read what’s included before you compare two monthly numbers, and treat every headline as provider-reported.

Questions & answers

What is the average cost of a vCISO in 2026?

There is no reliable single average, because no independent survey of actual vCISO invoices exists — the public figures are provider list prices and provider-published benchmarks. Across the providers that publish rates, mid-market monthly retainers cluster roughly between $3,000 and $12,500 per month (FRSecure $4,000–$6,000; CBIZ Pivot Point Security $4,500–$12,500; SideChannel $3,000–$12,000). Startups run lower ($1,500–$5,000/month) and regulated or multi-framework programs run higher ($9,000–$20,000/month).

How do vCISO firms structure their pricing?

Six published models: monthly retainer ($2,000–$20,000/mo across providers), hourly advisory ($175–$600/hour), retainer overages ($250–$400/hour above the monthly allotment), fixed-scope projects ($5,000–$75,000), productized fixed-price work (e.g. a $2,500 SOC 2 sprint, a $24,000 90-day foundation), and tiered by-hours retainers (roughly $3,500 for 10–20 hours up to $15,000 for 30–45 hours/month). Enterprise/interim engagements are quoted annually, around $120,000/year and up.

How much does a vCISO cost by company size?

Using published provider bands: startup (1–50 employees) $1,500–$5,000/month; small business (50–200) $3,000–$8,000; mid-market (200–500) $5,000–$15,000; upper mid-market (500–1,000) $10,000–$20,000; enterprise (1,000+) $15,000+/month or a full-time hire. These are provider-published ranges, not an invoice survey — scope, compliance deadlines, and operator seniority move the number more than headcount alone.

Is a vCISO cheaper than a full-time CISO?

Almost always, yes. Published salary sources put a full-time CISO's base pay around $174,000–$184,000 on average (Indeed, PayScale), with a higher occupational benchmark near $385,000 (Salary.com). Total compensation with equity runs far higher — IANS/Artico's 2025 survey reports an average of $415,000 for CISOs at companies under $1B revenue, and $744,000–$844,000 sector averages at larger enterprises. A vCISO retainer of $60,000–$216,000/year delivers executive-level judgment at a fraction of loaded full-time cost, until the security workload justifies a dedicated hire.

Why is vCISO pricing so hard to compare?

Because 'vCISO' is a role, not a product, and the published numbers mix three different things: a provider's own list price, a provider's benchmark of 'typical' engagements (no disclosed dataset), and genuine surveys that measure provider demand rather than customer prices (like Cynomi's State of the vCISO). No reputable independent survey publishes actual customer retainer, hourly, and project distributions — so treat every headline figure as provider-reported, and read what's included before comparing two monthly numbers.
